Anacortes to Port Angeles

And we’re off…. After a couple of shakedown sails in and around Anacortes and LOTS of provisioning trips we have our windlass fixed and can finally set sail for Port Angeles. Roughly 45miles with fairly flat seas and moderate winds from the SW. With fog, ferries and shipping lanes to think about, we are definitely a little aprehensive, but keen to get going and get this adventure started! We untied the dock lines at 08h30 and set off into the Guemes Channel, past Lopez Island and into the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Sails up once in the strait and we managed a respectable 7kts for a while on a beam reach. Wind started to die just as we were enjoying ourselves and we motorsailed the rest of the way.

Arrived at Boat Haven marina in Port Angeles around 4pm and managed to reverse into a side tie at the public dock. Not the neatest, but not much entertainment for the onlookers either. I’ll take it. Now where’s my beer…

Port Angeles

4 days in this neat little Washington town. Getting the hang of this “no car” story, and walking to the shops with rucksacks.

Port Angeles to Neah Bay

Neah bay is a small coastal community on the Makah Reservation, near the most northwesterly point of Washington State (Cape Flattery).

We left Port Angeles in the dary (6:00am) into the lightest westerly wind for a few days – given that the wind normally pumps in from the Pacific. We hugged the shoreline, and motored the entire 55 miles in rain/drizzle and fog. As we neared Neah Bay, the Pacific Swells started to become noticable and we were happy to feel the stability of a 50′ sailboat compared to our little 38′ weekend sailboat (still sitting in Ladysmith, unsold!). the drizzle and fog really set in, and we pulled into the protection of Neah Bay in some really dreary weather.

160 miles logged to date.
